Sweet Baby Jesus! I had no idea what I had been missing! I had Cracker Barrel’s version of fried apples before & always thought it was good. Canned apples were like a vague reference to Cracker Snackers, but in a pinch OK. Now I know what I’m doing, it will be home made always!
2077 went on a deer camp hunting trip and brought back a few basic recipes. Fried apples was the first one. They camp very primitive…pack it all in & such, so their cooking gear was small, lightweight, and portable and yields small portions. 2077 gave me to basic recipe then left me unsupervised! Which translates into I made A LOT of fried apples!
So here’s what I did:
3 lbs. of Gala apples, cored and cut (use whatever you want – this was cheapest at Walmart and a good apple. I did leave the skins on)
2 sticks of butter
Sugar to taste
Cinnamon to taste
My skillet was slap full and it took me a while to cook it, mainly because I was cooking a whole chicken and didn’t want the apples to finish off early. You need to cook the apples until they are soft. I cut mine bigger, but if you want it to cook faster cut them smaller. Simmer/reduce until the juice gets like syrup.
We ate this for a dessert and then the next morning put some in our oatmeal – out of this world!
Dig in & enjoy!
